During the autumn, work on a new technology for recycling textiles was started at the pulp mill in Mörrum.

In the factory, a textile pulp, called dissolving pulp, is produced, which consists mainly of birch wood. The pulp is used, among other things, in the textile industry in the manufacture of viscose and lyocell.

Becomes a yarn

Using the new technology, cotton fibers can be released from old cotton and blend fabrics. The cotton fibers are then blended into the production of the textile pulp.

- Our customers turn the pulp into new textile fibers, which then turn into yarn and eventually become a finished fabric, says Johannes Bogren, Head of Södra Cell Bioproducts.

The idea came three years ago and during the autumn production has started in the factory.

So far, 20 tonnes of recycled textiles have been used during the year. The long-term goal is to reach 25,000 tonnes of textiles per year.

Challenge to get textiles

The biggest challenge in the future is to get sufficient quantities of textiles. Therefore, we are now looking for partners who can supply textiles.

- People throw or donate old clothes and fabrics. We don't get it as a raw material and we have to get that flow, says Johannes Bogren.

If the new production can lead to new hires, you cannot answer at this time.
