"Another ten victims were found during the night, giving a total figure of 40," the Ministry of Defense writes in a statement today.

Albania is Europe's poorest country and Tuesday's quake, which had a magnitude of 6.4, caused great devastation. So far, 46 people have been rescued and are now being cared for in hospitals.

Sweden in place

More than 200 foreign experts participate in the search efforts, and Sweden will also participate in the rescue work. The Swedish Agency for Social Protection and Emergency Preparedness (MSB) assists with a search and rescue expert to help coordinate the nine rescue teams that are in place.

The quake is the strongest in Europe so far in 2019 and was felt in many places in the Balkans and in the region of Puglia in southern Italy. At least 250 aftershocks have also shaken the country, two of them with magnitude 5.
