by Tiziana Di Giovannandrea November 27, 2019The request for a new sentence advanced by the Prosecutor, after the first instance, for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was accepted by the Court of Appeal of Porto Alegre.

The Regional Federal Court of Porto Alegre confirmed the judgment issued in the first degree, last February, by a single judge of Curitiba for the crimes of corruption and money laundering, in the process known as the 'Atibaia case'.

Lula da Silva is accused of having received as a gift, from various construction companies, the use of a residence in the town of Atibaia, in the State of Sao Paulo, as compensation for a special treatment given to the companies by his government .

The prosecutor in addition to asking for confirmation of the sentence also asked for the increase in the sentence imposed on the former president.

Two of the three magistrates who made up the second instance judiciary immediately rejected Lula's defense appeals, then, in the end, the three judges of the Regional Federal Court of Porto Alegre, as well as confirming the sentence for corruption and money laundering, tightened the penalty, as requested by the public prosecutor's office, from the former Brazilian president, bringing her from 12 years and 6 months to 17 years and 1 month.

The lawyers of Lula de Silva called the whole proceeding a "judicial farce".
