The new European Commission must be elected this Wednesday 27 November by MEPs meeting in Strasbourg, so it should be able to get to work in a few days. There is little suspense, although abstentions are likely to be numerous.

Forgotten, for the moment, the reservations on the nomination process of Ursula von der Leyen , François Xavier Bellamy is satisfied with the new commission, deputies Republicans and the EPP group, got what they wanted.

" We are pleased with the French commissioner in particular, explains François-Xavier Bellamy. I'm sure Thierry Breton will face the challenges of the industry for tomorrow. Then some topics that were important to us, I think for example the promotion of the European way of life, it seems to us to go in the right direction .

MEPs also seem pleased with Ursula von der Leyen's flagship project: the "Green New Deal", an ambitious program to fight for the planet. A program whose macronistes claim a little inspiration and to which the support of the parliamentary group Renew Europe is acquired, that of the Socialist and Democratic deputies too. Like the Austrian Évelyne Regner, many are seduced by the promises of the new president.

The unitary left will vote against

" She talked about minimum wages, doing the Green New Deal, proposing guidelines so that women can earn the same wages as men, so I'm going to vote for this commission because I want it to start now. " says the Austrian MP.

The few French members of the delegation will, however, abstain, as all the European greens. No question of signing a blank check. Promises are not enough. The group of the unitary left will vote against, as the identity group at the opposite extreme.

We have been working for several weeks with the European Commission to co-build what is known as the Green Deal, namely the set of rules we will be changing on the climate, on biodiversity, on plastics, on the ocean, on so many topics that there is a before and after.

The commission should be elected this Wednesday morning and get to work quickly, the relief of deputies, impatient, all political colors combined to go into action.

  • Paris and Berlin want to relaunch the EU

With our Brussels office,

Paris and Berlin sent to the other capitals of the EU a two-page document presented as a food for thought to give a new impetus to the EU. One of these suggestions is, for example, to review the way in which the person who chairs the European Commission is chosen. The goal is not to reproduce the difficulties encountered this year, namely the bickering between capitals or the challenge around the " Spitzenkandidat ", the top candidate.

France and Germany propose to begin with a review of the functioning of the institutions of the European Union to make them more transparent and more democratic. Examples could be transnational lists for the next European elections or the involvement of citizens.

In a second step, Paris and Berlin propose to review one by one all major headings, all the major priorities that Europe must seize and priorities to reform. The Franco-German proposal evokes security and defense, innovation, social protection, digitization, or the climate but also the policy of enlargement, the current dispute between France and Germany. This is the sign that this reflection, which the two countries propose to carry out over the next two years, is both a stimulus proposal for Europe and the symbol of a restart of the Franco-German couple considered to be judgment.
