US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Oman's Minister for Foreign Affairs Yusuf bin Alawi have agreed that a political solution in Yemen can end the conflict and ensure peace and security in the country, a State Department statement said.

The two ministers discussed developments in Yemen and the recent Saudi-sponsored agreement between the legitimate Yemeni government and the Southern Transitional Council, the statement said.

The two sides also discussed the importance of a unified Gulf Council to enhance security and stability in the region. Pompeo praised the partnership with Oman and its cooperation in security and anti-terrorism issues.

Yousuf bin Alawi said there was positive communication and development in what he described as consultations and mediation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.

Following his meeting with the US Secretary of State, the Omani Minister revealed that there is a certain Saudi desire, which is similar to that of the Houthis on security, peace and stability in Yemen.
