The cost of lighting at Christmas time varies greatly in the county. While Nyköping, Strängnäs, Gnesta and Oxelösund have been at about the same level every year since 2017, the costs commute from year to year in several of the other municipalities in Sörmland.
Christmas lighting for half a millionThe municipalities that have recently invested in new decorations are not paying as much this year. Examples of this are Katrineholm and Eskilstuna who bought new Christmas lights for almost half a million SEK each in 2017.
This year, Katrineholm purchased new lighting for just over SEK 50,000 and an additional cost of approximately SEK 125,000 will be added to it. In Eskilstuna this year, more than SEK 200,000 is being spent on lighting up streets and squares.
Trosa is the municipality that puts the most money on Christmas lights this year, over SEK 250,000 for both new purchases and operations. Last year, the total cost landed at SEK 570,000.
- We had some that we replaced and had to pick down. Much of the operating cost is the installation and removal of the lighting. This is included when choosing to invest in this, says Ulf Hagstedt, technical manager at Trosa.

The only thing purchased is lamps that need to be replaced in the existing Christmas decorations. Nor does the municipality report operating costs for the Christmas lights alone, since it is switched on in the same way as the usual street lights.
