In DR Congo, riots against the inaction of the Congolese authorities and the United Nations in the face of killings of civilians caused two new victims on Tuesday, November 26, in the east of the country. Two demonstrators were killed in Beni and the neighboring town of Butembo, 50 km away, military prosecutor Kumbu Ngoma told an AFP correspondent in Beni.

The assessment was confirmed by a spokesman for the United Nations Mission in Congo (Monusco) in Kinshasa.

In Beni, an AFP correspondent saw the body of a young man hit in the head, lying on the road 50 meters from the civilian base of the Monusco vandalized and burned the day before by the demonstrators.

A hundred people were again gathered on Tuesday at the same base, protected by peacekeepers from Malawi, said the correspondent, who saw Congolese security forces pass in the same area where shots were heard. .

"I do not know who fired," said the military prosecutor in charge of the investigation.

Six people killed since protests began

In Butembo, a city spared by the killings attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), residents have however demonstrated to "sympathize with the people of Beni," told AFP a civil society leader, Edgar Mateso.

Butembo police chief Richard Mmambi said he sent an "intelligence officer" to the scene of the protest after he learned that "there was a person killed by a stray bullet".

"The demonstrations are anti-Monusco and anti-authorities," said the UN spokesman.

The presidency announced Monday in Kinshasa "joint operations between the national army and Monusco" in Beni "to ensure peace and security for the civilian population."

At least four demonstrators were killed the same day in Beni in riots targeting the UN facilities. The inhabitants protested after another massacre of eight people in the night.
