Albania was hit again by a powerful earthquake on Tuesday. At least thirteen people died and 135 injured. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4 and was therefore heavier than the one in September.
The earthquake occurred shortly before 4.00 am, about 30 kilometers west of the capital Tirana and at a depth of 10 kilometers. This is according to data from the US seismological service USGS.
The shock was felt in Tirana and the nearby port of Durres, among others. According to the authorities, several buildings have collapsed and residents are trapped under the rubble. Emergency services are trying to get them out.
One man died in the village of Kurbin, after he panicked and then jumped out of a building, according to the Albanian Ministry of Defense. Three other fatalities were under the rubble.
Several small shocks took place before the earthquake. They could be felt in the Balkans and in Puglia, in the southeast of Italy. A powerful after-shock took place around 7 a.m.
The earthquake of September 21 had a magnitude of 5.6, making it the worst earthquake in Albania in the past thirty years. More than a hundred people were injured. According to the authorities, around five hundred homes were damaged.
