Police have arrested a man for allegedly setting a 77-year-old woman on fire in a children's playground in the Son Peretó neighborhood of Palma on Tuesday. The victim was seriously injured and was initially transferred to the Son Espases hospital.

The woman had second and third degree burns in 20 percent of the body , mainly the chest area, so after being evaluated by plastic surgeons it was decided to transfer her to the Vall d'Hebron hospital in Barcelona. Hospital sources have told Europa Press that the woman is in critical condition .

The aggression has occurred around 10 am this morning. The woman was on a bench in the aforementioned park when the man has approached her, threw a flammable liquid and set her on fire.

A mobile UVI from the 061 emergency service came to the scene and after attending to the victim, she was transferred to the public hospital of Son Espases.

A worker from Emaya, the water and sewerage company of the Balearic capital, has helped the victim and stifled the flames that burned her body and clothes , as reported by Emergency Service 112.

As confirmed by the police force, the detainee is the same as after the assault was taken to the Police Headquarters for identification purposes and as a witness, in case it was related to what happened, reports Europa Press.

The homicide group is working on the case to clarify the facts and, for the moment, no hypothesis is ruled out.

The victim herself has narrated that a man has set her on fire while she was sleeping on a bench in the playground of Son Peretó on Tuesday.
