The Constitutional Court of Peru declared on Monday a recourse that sought the freedom of opposition leader Keiko Fujimori, so it annulled the order of preventive detention that had been serving for almost 13 months, said a magistrate.

"The court has agreed to accept habeas corpus" filed in favor of Keiko by his sister Sachi Fujimori , said the president of that court, Ernesto Blume , announcing an unappealable ruling.

Keiko, 44, considered the most powerful person in Peru between 2016-2018, was sent to pretrial detention on October 31, 2018 for allegedly interfering with prosecutorial inquiries in the scandal of the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, who confessed having illegally distributed millions of dollars among members of the Peruvian political class, including four former presidents.

To avoid further interference with the investigations, prosecutor José Domingo Pérez asked the court for 36 months of preventive detention for the first-born of the former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000). Then the period was lowered to 18 months by the Supreme Court.

Blume clarified, however, that the Constitutional Court did not rule on the merits of the prosecution's accusation against Keiko, as a decision of acquittal or conviction must be handed down later by the corresponding judicial instances.

"Justice has been done, a divine justice. God is great. I want my wife to get out of jail and together we go home with my daughters," said Keiko's husband, the American Mark Vito Villanella, who was fulfilling the ruling. outside the prison a hunger strike to press for the release of his wife.

Keiko's main allies went outside the female prison of Chorrillos , in southern Lima, where they hugged and prayed with her husband.

Keiko, who has two daughters, will not be released immediately, as certain formalities must be fulfilled. Blume said the ruling will be notified just Thursday to the parties.
