BEIRUT (Reuters) - Attorney General Ghassan Oweidat has launched an investigation into attacks by supporters of Hezbollah and Amal militiamen on demonstrators in the Ring district of Beirut, judicial sources said on Wednesday.
Oweidat instructed the judicial authorities in Beirut and the police in the center of the capital to investigate and instructed the security and military services to provide him with information about the incident.
The judiciary requested that all surveillance cameras installed in the area be collected and unloaded. The security services began hearing statements from the military and civilians wounded in Sunday night's attacks.
Clashes erupted between demonstrators on the one hand and supporters of Hezbollah and Amal movement on the other in the capital Beirut on Sunday night, and continued until the early hours of yesterday morning.
Army personnel intervened to form a barrier separating the protesters from the supporters of the two groups on the main Ring Road bridge, as the two sides threw stones at the road, and a motorcycle was set on fire. Lebanese security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowds. The clashes injured a number of demonstrators and some Lebanese security personnel.
Supporters of Hezbollah and Amal waved flags of both movements and chanted slogans in support of Hassan Nasrallah. On the other hand, the demonstrators chanted, "Revolution, revolution."
The clashes are the worst tension in the capital since a pro-Hezbollah and Amal rally attacked and destroyed the main protest camp in central Beirut last month.
Yesterday, the Lebanese continued their protests demanding the formation of a technocratic government.
