Iraqi Defense Minister Najah al-Shammari was active in the military during Saddam Hussein's regime, but that did not prevent his citizenship application in Sweden. Säpo examined his case but did not consider that he posed a threat to the security of the kingdom and therefore had no objection. This is stated by Mikael Ribbenvik, Director General of the Migration Agency, in Aktuellt.
According to Ribbenvik, such trials are standard and that was also at the time when Najah al-Shammari, although under a different name, was granted citizenship in 2015. Now he is suspected of crimes against humanity and also of grants and public accounts in Sweden.
