WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The US Navy will continue its efforts to drive out a special forces soldier, Navy Seals, in defiance of President Donald Trump's desire, a senior Pentagon official said on condition of anonymity.

Soldier Edward Gallagher was charged with stabbing to death a young prisoner of ISIS terrorist organization, attempting to kill civilians in Iraq in 2017, and obstructing the course of justice. The body of the young man, his rank was demoted.

Trump decided on November 15 to overturn the decision to demote the 40-year-old soldier, and the Navy this week launched a measure that could result in stripping him and three others in his unit, effectively expelling them from the Navy unit. Trump angrily said on Twitter on Thursday that "the Navy will not strip the fighter and Marine Edward Gallagher of his rank."

For his part, said the official «Pentagon», that the special council, which reviewed the files of the elements «is in the process», and will decide the Council, which will be held next December, whether Gallagher will remain in his unit or not.
