Pope's visit to Japanese pastoral message Pope's speech on nuclear weapons
November 24, 2019

Dear brothers and sisters.

This place reminds us that we human beings can make mistakes, with sorrow and fear. In recent years, the A-bombed cross and the statue of Mary, found at the Urakami Church, remind us once again of the hardship of the survivors and their families who have suffered from the body.

One of the deepest hopes in human mind is the desire for peace and stability. Owning nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction is not the best answer to this hope. On the contrary, this desire is continually exposed to trials. Our world is in an uncontrollable division. It is a solution to build peace and security on the false certainty based on fear and mutual distrust. It squeezes the relationship between people and prevents mutual dialogue.

International peace and stability are incompatible with any company based on the fear of mutual destruction and the threat of destruction. Rather, it can only be achieved through global ethics of mutual respect, service co-operation and solidarity shared by all human families now and in the future.

This is a town that is a witness to the tragic consequences of nuclear weapons both humane and to the environment. And voices against the arms race are constantly rising. Arms expansion competition is a waste of valuable resources. It should be used for the holistic development of people and the conservation of the natural environment. In today's world, millions of children and families are forced to live below humans. However, weapons are spent, built and built on weapons manufacturing, improvement, maintenance and commerce, and daily weapons are becoming more destructive. These are tremendous acts of terrorism.

A peaceful world freed from nuclear weapons. It's the eagerness of countless people everywhere. Realizing this ideal requires the participation of everyone. Individuals, religious groups, civil society, countries with nuclear weapons, non-owned countries, military and private, international organizations. We must unitely respond to the threat of nuclear weapons. It is based on mutual trust based on a difficult but solid structure that breaks the flow of distrust that covers the present world. In 1963, Pope St. John 23 appealed to the world for the prohibition of nuclear weapons in his recovery “Peace in Terris” (see 112). I am also doing it. “The understanding that armament balance is a condition of peace needs to be replaced by the principle that true peace can only be built on mutual trust” (No. 113).

We must break the flow of mutual distrust now expanding. Mutual distrust risks the international framework that limits weapon use. We are witnessing the decline of multilateralism. That is even more dangerous in weapons innovation. This indication may seem unrealistic from the current situation characterized by mutual connections, but leaders from all countries should not only take urgent attention but also put power It's a point.

As a Catholic Church, we are firmly determined to achieve peace between people and the nation. It is a duty to God and to everyone on this earth. You will act quickly and sue without getting tired in accordance with major international legal principles on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, including the Convention on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Last July, the Japan Bishops Council called for the abolition of nuclear weapons. In addition, every 10 months of peace season for peace is held in Japanese churches every August. Please pray, the timeless search for the promotion of unity, and the persistent invitation to dialogue are the “weapons” that we believe in. It will also inspire efforts to build a world of justice and solidarity that truly guarantees peace.

I ask the leaders in charge of politics with the conviction that a world without nuclear weapons is possible and necessary. Keep in mind that nuclear weapons do not protect us from today's international and national security threats. From a humanitarian and environmental standpoint, we must consider the devastating destruction caused by the use of nuclear weapons. The amplification of fear, disbelief, and hostility, driven by nuclear theory, must be stopped. From the viewpoint of the current state of the earth, it is necessary to seriously consider how the resources are used. Serious consideration must also be given to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Complex and Difficult Sustainable Development, the goal of the holistic development of mankind. In 1964, Pope St. Paul VI has already proposed that the World Fund be created from a part of the defense expenses and used to help the poor ("Speech to a reporter in Mumbai (1964 12 4th of May) ”, see Kasumi“ Poprolum Progressio (March 26, 1967) ”.

For all of this, it is vital to create a structure that ensures trust and mutual development, and to get the cooperation of leaders who can respond to the situation. Responsibilities are all about us and all are needed. Today, no one can be indifferent to the suffering of the millions of people we are hurting. There is no one who can close their ears to the brother's voice crying out of the pain of the wound. No one can close their eyes before the ruin of a culture that cannot interact.

Please pray in unison every day so that you can change your mind and win the culture of life, forgiveness, and culture of brotherhood. It is brotherhood that recognizes and guarantees mutual differences while aiming for a common destination.

Some of you here may not be Catholics. But I am convinced that the prayer for peace, derived from St. Francis of Assisi, is the prayer for all of us.

Lord, make me a tool for your peace.
Love where there is hatred,
Forgiveness where there is a trouble,
Faith in doubt,
Hope where there is despair,
Light in the darkness,
Please bring joy to the place of sorrow.

This place to remember, not only does it let us be indifferent, but also encourages us to trust in God. It also encourages us to work as a true peace tool. It is also recommended not to make the same mistakes as the past.

I pray that you, your family, and the whole nation can enjoy the grace of prosperity and social harmony.
