On Saturday, November 23, two weeks before hearings before the International Court of Justice, a meeting was held between the country's highest officials: an opportunity to recall the Burmese position on the Rohingya crisis.

With our correspondent in Yangon, Sarah Bakaloglou

The meeting before the hearings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) was held before the Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi, ministers, but also the head of the army. The country is accused by the Gambia of "acts of genocide" against the Rohingya minority in the highest court of the UN. 740,000 members of this Muslim minority fled the repression of the Burmese army in 2017.

► Also to listen: The Rohingya crisis is two years old

Burma's position is clear since the violence of August 2017: the army has only reacted to the attacks of the Rohingya rebellion, it has neither ethnic cleansing nor genocide in the country and the international community does not understand not the complexity of the situation in the state of Arakan.

Aung San Suu Kyi as a lawyer

The government has recalled this, and that is probably what it will say before the UN: internal commissions have been formed to investigate human rights violations against the Rohingya.

A Burmese position to be defended by Aung San Suu Kyi in person before the Court in the Netherlands. Embodying Burma's defense on this issue proves that this military girl has very little regard for her image - already degraded - in the eyes of the international community. The leader enjoys significant support in Burma among the population, the majority of whom regard the Rohingya as illegal immigrants. This choice to defend the country is therefore not trivial at one year of general elections.
