November 23, 2019 Seven and a half years in prison: this is the penalty imposed by British justice yesterday on two Italians, aged 25 and 26, convicted last month in London of the rape of a girl consumed on February 26, 2017 in a nightclub. An infamy celebrated then without restraint under the eye of a surveillance camera almost like a business to compliment each other.

The story goes back to the time when the two, Ferdinando Orlando and Lorenzo Costanzo, outlined by the American media as children of "good family", attended post-graduate courses at London universities. Theater of Misdeed, a club on Argyll Street, in the heart of Soho.

At the height of a good night, the encounter with the victim, a 23-year-old described by witnesses as now drunk and almost unable to stand up, therefore unable to defend herself or freely express her will. A prey, in short, according to the investigations of Scotland Yard, that the duo had quickly approached, before moving to the closet where the double abuse was perpetrated.

So brutal that Lorenzo and Ferdinando seem to have been seen leaving a quarter of an hour later, supporting the girl on both sides, finally abandoned in a bathroom of the wounded and semi-unconscious local.

The defendants defended themselves claiming to have had "consensual" relations. While the girl told something else: that she had awakened in pain and drowsiness, helped by a French couple, and that she had to have recourse to a hospitalization, accompanied that same night by her apartment companion, before being able to put pen to paper the complaint before the police.

Until the guilty verdict issued on October 16 by a judge at Isleworth Crown Court in London, who made the investigators' report his own by charging Costanzo and Orlando with "taking advantage of a vulnerable victim". Hence the condemnation of sexual violence and serious injuries. Condemnation resulted in the indication of the sentence on Friday, according to the Anglo-Saxon Common Law procedure.

A severe punishment, also for that video shock - shown during the trial - with the two nailed outside the club immediately after the facts to give themselves a high five, to hug and watch the video of the aggression that they themselves could not at the end do not acknowledge having turned on a mobile phone.

The sentence was greeted last month as an act of justice by Rebecca Woodsford, Scotland Yard detective in charge of the case. "Costanzo and Orlando," Woodsford had commented, "had calculated that they could attack a vulnerable person with impunity, boast about it and get away with it. But they hurt the accounts and now they will pay the price of their shares."
