The chairman of the People's Congress Party, Ali al-Haj, was arrested on Friday at his home. According to the coordinator of the legal committee of the Forces for Freedom and Change, he is charged with his role in the coup that brought Omar al-Bashir to power in 1989.

Ali al-Haj is now incarcerated in Kober Prison, where former President Bashir is held. His arrest is part of an investigation by the Prosecutor General into the June 30, 1989 coup d'état that brought Omar al-Bashir to power.

At the time, Ali al-Haj, who is now the chairman of the People's Congress Party, a split of the former president's party, was a member of the military junta.

According to the Forces for Freedom and Change, an arrest warrant was issued last week against all members of the command council of the National Islamic Front, led at the time by Omar al-Bashir. His deputy, the secretary general of the Congress People's Party, Ibrahim el-Sanoussi, is also concerned by this procedure. Their holdings and bank accounts were frozen earlier this week. And it is now forbidden for them to leave the territory.

Ally, then rival of Omar al-Bashir, Ali al-Haj is a figure of the Islamist movement of Hassan al-Turabi. Even if he had finally approached the former head of state in recent years, ten days ago, in a press conference, he felt that lessons should be learned from the " mistakes " of the past. And he had even called for the transfer to the International Criminal Court of his former ally.
