In response to the enactment of a law that compensated for up to 1,800,000 yen to relieve discrimination damage to the family of former patients with leprosy, the government now has over 17.9 billion yen as a necessary expense at the Cabinet meeting on the 22nd Decided to spend from the annual budget reserves.

A law was enacted on the 15th of this month that stipulated that the country should pay compensation for not only ex-patients but also families suffering due to the country's erroneous isolation policy over leprosy.

In response to this, the government decided to spend 17.9 billion yen 38 million yen from the reserve for this year's budget as expenses for compensation payment at the cabinet meeting on the 22nd.

The number of families subject to the compensation system is expected to be about 20,000 to 30,000, and 1.8 million yen will be paid to spouses and parents of former patients, and 1.3 million yen will be paid to siblings and relatives living together .

The deadline for claims for compensation is within 5 years from the 22nd, and the payment procedure is proceeding based on the person's request, and payment is expected to begin around January next year at the earliest.
