Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued a decree Thursday to increase the salaries of Syrian government workers and pensioners amid the collapse of the Syrian pound.

"The decree provides for an increase of 20,000 Syrian pounds (about $ 28) over the monthly salaries and wages of the military and civilians," the pages of social media sites affiliated with the Syrian presidency said.

The decree also stipulates an increase of 16,000 Syrian pounds (about $ 22) on the salaries of retirees.
