In rural areas, it is common to have bus stops that are directly adjacent to a heavily trafficked road, and where travelers have to walk on the road to get to the bus stop. This applies to the small community of Triabo outside Virserum in Kalmar county, where the bus stop is near national road 23. Eva-Maria Helgesson lives in Triabo and has contacted the Swedish Transport Administration regarding their route.

Dark and dangerous

To get to the bus, the villagers are forced to walk in the roads at the same time as commuters and trucks rush past right next door.

- We need a safe passage to the bus stop, which is at road 23, two hundred meters south. The road to the bus stop has no lighting and you have to walk by the roadside. We want the bus stop to be moved closer to the village, says Eva-Maria.

There are many similar stops

At the Swedish Transport Administration in Kalmar you know the problem with these bus stops which are dangerously close to busy roads. Malin Davou at the Swedish Transport Administration in Kalmar agrees that the traffic situation around the stop in Triabo is not good.

- We talk to the residents in Triabo about the possibilities of building a walkway to the bus stop, but it is more expensive to build a walkway to the bus stop than it is to move it. So that's why we won't build a walkway, says Malin Davou.

Eva-Maria is scared every time she has to go by the road to get to the bus stop and she thinks it's only a matter of time before something happens here.

- There has been no accident here. But we shouldn't have to wait until someone gets hurt here, says Eva-Maria.
