The US Congress has overwhelmingly passed a resolution that supports anti-Chinese protesters in Hong Kong, a text that must now be promulgated by President Donald Trump.

The so-called "Law of Human Rights and Democracy of Hong Kong" was adopted by the House of Representatives by 417 votes against one, one day after the Senate unanimously approved it, to the anger of Beijing. The rule requires that the president of the United States annually review the special economic status that Washington grants to the former British colony, according to AFP.

The House voted 417 to 1 in favor of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Law, which in turn was passed unanimously by the Senate on Tuesday. Strong support for the measure was expected, as members of the House approved a similar bill last month.

The legislation, which has angered the Beijing government, would require the State Department to certify at least once a year that the city ruled by China retain sufficient autonomy to maintain the special commercial consideration of the United States, reports Reuters.

It would also establish sanctions against officials responsible for human rights violations in Hong Kong.

Protesters in Hong Kong have been protesting in the streets amid growing violence and fear that China will increase its response to stop civil disobedience. Protesters are angry at what they see as the Chinese interference in the promised freedoms to Hong Kong when Britain returned it to China.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio was one of the main sponsors of the bill passed by the Senate, along with Republican Senator Jim Risch and Democratic Senators Bob Menéndez and Ben Cardin.

In addition to this measure, the Chamber also approved by 417 to 0 a second bill, which the Senate had already passed unanimously on Tuesday. This involves banning the export of certain crowd control munitions to Hong Kong police forces. This measure prohibits the export of items such as tear gas, pepper gas, rubber bullets and paralyzing guns.
