"Secretary of State Pompeo and Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu discussed bilateral relations between the United States and Turkey, focusing on bilateral and multilateral security and defense," the State Department said in a statement.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump met with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the White House.

Erdogan, during negotiations in Washington, returned a letter to his American counterpart in which the head of the White House urged the Turkish leader not to play the fool.
