It was Monday that the suspension bridge suddenly collapsed and two vehicles, a truck and a car, fell into the water. Initially, the emergency services announced that one person died in the collapse, a 15-year-old girl. Later, local authorities stated that another person, who was driving the truck, also died in connection with the accident. This is reported by the Reuters news agency.

Truck weighed more than twice as much

The accident is now under investigation, but already a probable explanation is presented for the race, reports among other BBC News and French Le Figaro The truck weighed more than 50 tons, investigators say. The suspension bridge was capable of a maximum weight of 19 tonnes.

"That this heavy vehicle was driving on the bridge seems to be the immediate and obvious cause of the accident," investigator Dominique Alzeari said during a press conference on Tuesday, BBC News writes.

The collapsed bridge was built in 1931 and linked the two communities of Mirepoix-sur-Tarn and Bessières about three miles north of the city of Toulouse.
