The Hong Kong tournament, one of the largest in Asia to begin on November 28, has been postponed because of "the persistent level of social unrest" in the former British colony, announced Wednesday the European circuit of golf (EPGA), which co-sanctions this event with the Asian Tour.

"The decision was made because of the persistent level of social unrest in Hong Kong, the top priority being the safety of our players, our staff, stakeholders and everyone involved in each of our tournaments around the world, we believe this decision is the right one, even unfortunate, "said Keith Pelley, the executive director of the EPGA.

"We hope to be able to go back there early next year," she said in the statement.

An optimism shared by Cho Minn Thant, boss of the Asian Tour, who hopes that "once the situation stabilized in Hong Kong, we will be in a better position to organize the 61st edition of the Hong Kong Open in the very future. close".

The Hong Kong tournament was scheduled from November 28th to December 1st.

The protest movement, which began in June in the former British colony, rocked last week in a new phase, much more violent, with a strategy called "Eclore everywhere" ("Blossom Everywhere"), which consists of multiply the simultaneous actions to test the font to the maximum.
