MOSCOW (Reuters) - Two men died in a car in a central street on Tuesday when the asphalt layer collapsed beneath the vehicle and plunged into a hot water system, the Russian investigation committee said.

The vehicle, parked in front of a shop in the city of Penza (about 600 km southeast of Moscow), plunged into a sink formed immediately "filled with hot water," the commission, Russia's highest investigation agency, said.

According to media reports, the water was boiling hot. Investigators published a picture of the vehicle recovered from the crater and covered with a cloud of steam. The authorities opened a criminal case over the incident.
