A passing couple saw Sam in the water, and could throw in a life jacket. But the strong winds and high waves prevented him from getting ashore, but he remained in the cold water for at least 30 minutes.
When the emergency service arrived, he had a body temperature of 32 degrees, and was immediately flown to a hospital where he could recover well.
