Matera (Basilicata) European Capital of Culture 2019, was swept into the night by a tornado that caused falling trees and lampposts and damaged many roofs and buildings, without causing injuries. AFP

Venice is not the only city in Italy to have been hit by violent weather. In recent days, all of Italy is suffering from floods. From north to south, the firefighters multiply their interventions, especially in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna where the rivers threaten to overflow. But some southern cities feel abandoned by the state. Among them, Matera, which is the European capital of culture 2019.

From our correspondent in Rome , Anne Le Nir

In Matera , famous for its troglodyte dwellings, the whole population deplores the absence of government representatives. This city of Basilicata has however suffered very significant damage, because of heavy rains of recent days. For the moment, the situation is improving in the south.

On the other hand, it is the red alert in central and northern Italy. In Tuscany, rains mixed with gusts of wind, threaten the cities of Florence and Pisa, crossed by the river Arno, whose level approaches the critical threshold; never reached since 1992. In Emilia-Romagna, floods and mudslides required hundreds of rescue interventions.

And in the Alto Adige, a landslide caused the derailment of a regional train, fortunately without causing casualties. But many villages are isolated and without electricity. In all these areas, most schools are closed. And we start to calculate the losses, especially in the agriculture sector.
