On Sunday, Boplat's annual booth fair was held in Gothenburg. 35 different housing companies were present to show planned and ongoing new construction. The newbuildings will be in the Gothenburg area, down to Kungsbacka in the south and up to Trollhättan in the north - a maximum of one hour commuting distance from Gothenburg.

Many curious housing applicants came to the housing fair.

- We really live well, but we would like to live a little bigger, preferably near the water. We are here and dreaming a bit, says the visitor Lena Dahl, who is looking for a new condominium.

Gothenburg worst on rental rates - among the big cities

And the majority of housing will be condominiums. According to Boplats, 35 percent of the new homes are planned to become rental properties.

According to the magazine Hem & Hyra, Gothenburg last year was the worst on building new rental properties, given the number of residents, for the second year in a row. The compilation, which the newspaper has done based on figures from Statistics Sweden, writes that in 2018 and 2017, the minimum number of rental rights was built per 1000 inhabitants in Gothenburg, compared to Malmö and Stockholm.

Looking for rental right

The Bachini-José Garcete family, who also visited Sunday's housing fair, have only been in the country for just over a year and a half. They are currently living in an expensive second-hand apartment in Gothenburg and are looking for something bigger as the family grows.

- It is difficult to find an apartment because of the long residential queues. And since we recently came here to Sweden we are looking for a rental apartment, says María José Garcete.
