During a speech in Houston, the Secretary of State was asked how the US support for Israel’s “annexation” of the Golan is highly correlated with the condemnation of “Russian annexation” in Ukraine.

“We said this very clearly when the decision was made (on the recognition of the Golan. - RT ). We simply recognized the real situation and history that existed in this particular place, ”he said.

According to him, in the world there are many "controversial places" and "each has its own factual circumstances."

“There is a set of international norms and concepts, there are factual circumstances that contradict them, and where these norms are built, we must recognize them,” he added.

According to Pompeo, in accordance with this logic, the United States sees the difference between the Crimea and the Golan.

A video of his speech is published on YouTube.

Earlier in the United States, talking about the possible resumption of Russia's participation in the G8, they said that in 2014 Russia was expelled from this format “because of the annexation of Crimea”.

In April, Pompeo urged not to compare the situation with the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan and the reunification of Crimea with Russia.

The Secretary of State noted that Waggington’s rhetoric regarding the Golan Heights is not a “double standard policy” compared to attitudes toward Crimea.

Crimea became the Russian region after a referendum held in March 2014, in which the majority of the inhabitants of the peninsula called for reunification with Russia.
