On 11 November 2019, after several weeks of violent clashes that plunged the country into a deep crisis and under pressure from the army, Evo Morales resigned. The former Bolivian president has fled to Mexico, fearing for his safety. The Bolivian left denounces a coup.

On November 12, Jeanine Añez, vice-president of the Senate, proclaimed herself acting president in dubious conditions and calls for new elections in January. Thousands of protesters took to the streets to demand his resignation.
