The most adverse storm so far this autumn has forced the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) to activate on Thursday warnings of different graduation in 37 provinces and Melilla due to snowfall, strong gusts of wind, heavy waves or persistent rains.

Only the entire Canary Islands, Badajoz, Huelva, Seville, Cádiz, Córdoba, Toledo, Ciudad Real, Castellón, Tarragona, Barcelona, Girona and Ceuta are free from bad weather.

This winter weather is due to a mass of polar cold air that will be felt in large areas of Spain. There will be temperatures up to 10 degrees lower than normal, it will snow not only in mountainous areas because the snow level will drop to 700 meters, it will rain in large areas of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, and the maritime storm in the northwest will worsen, with waves of 10 meters in Galicia.

The passage of "a very active frontal system" will give way this Thursday to "an entry of very cold, humid and unstable air coming from high latitudes," as explained by one of the spokesmen of the Aemet, Rubén del Campo.

That flow went through the North Atlantic and it is "a mass of maritime polar air" , as Del Campo commented. That the mass is polar does not mean that the air flow comes from the North Pole, but that it comes from high latitudes. The coldest masses are called Arctic.

Red notice

The worst will occur in the peninsular northwest quadrant. In fact, Aemet has activated the red warning (extreme risk, the highest on a three-level scale) in Asturias (Cantabrian Mountains, Picos de Europa and Southwest) and León (Cantabrian Mountains) due to heavy snowfall that could leave at least 40 centimeters thick on the surface, and on the coast of A Coruña and Pontevedra, where waves of 10 meters are expected.

In addition, there is orange warning (important risk, the second on the scale) near the coasts of A Coruña and Pontevedra due to very strong gusts of wind of 100 to 110 km / h; the coast of Lugo, Asturias, Cantabria, Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa, by waves of six to seven meters; in Almería and Granada, due to intense waves.

A wave hits the wall of the Biscayan beach of Ereaga, as a result of the strong storm that hits the coast of the Bay of Biscay.

They also have the orange warning Ávila and Segovia (Central System), Burgos, Palencia (Cantabrian Mountains), Segovia, León (Bierzo), Cantabria (Liébana, center and valley of Villaverde), Zamora (Sanabria), Lleida (Aran Valley ), Lugo (mountain) and Asturias (central and Mining Valleys) for snowfall with 10 to 30 centimeters thick on the ground.

More notices

The rest of the notices are yellow (risk, the lowest on the scale). It should be noted that it will also snow in Jaén (Cazorla and Segura), Huesca and Lleida (Pyrenees), Teruel (Albarracín, Jiloca, Gúdar and Maestrazgo), La Rioja and Zaragoza (Iberian), Cuenca (serranía), Guadalajara (serranía and Parameras de Molina), Segovia (plateau), Soria, Madrid (sierra), Navarra (center and Pyrenees), Ourense (mountain and south), Álava (Llanada and Nervión basin) and Guipúzcoa and Vizcaya (interior), for somewhat less intense snowfall .

The snow level will go down between 700 and 900 meters in the Cantabrian, Galicia, the North Plateau, the Iberian System and the Pyrenees , and 1,000 meters in the peninsular southeast and Mallorca.

By phenomena, there are 29 provinces (the northwest quadrant and the peninsular southeast interior, and part of the Balearic Islands) and Melilla with wind warnings, 24 by snowfall (especially in high areas of the northern half), 13 by waves (all north and the southern Mediterranean) and one (Asturias) for rains.

Very cold

To all this is added that it will be a terrible day in terms of temperatures, which will fall throughout the peninsula except the Basque Country, and the decline will be noticeable (from six to eight degrees less) in much of the western half.

In fact, the maximum temperatures will be low in some provincial capitals, such as Segovia (5ºC); Leon (6); Ávila, Burgos, Palencia and Soria (7); Lugo, Pamplona, Salamanca and Valladolid (8), and Huesca, Oviedo and Zamora (9). Quite the opposite of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (24), and Almería and Murcia (21).
