Russia has begun building a helicopter base in the northeastern city of Qamishli, the defense ministry said on Thursday.

The new base will be protected by surface-to-air missile systems and three helicopters have already been deployed there, TASS reported.

The channel revealed that the Russian army transferred air defense systems from the base of Hmeimim in the countryside of Latakia to Qamishli.

The channel broadcast a report showing the arrival of a group of military helicopters, it said it arrived for the first time to the airport in Qamishli from the base of Hmeimim.

The report also confirmed that the airport in Qamishli is protected by Bantzer air defense systems.

Russian forces are mainly based at the Hmeimim base, where Moscow and the Syrian regime signed an agreement in August 2015 granting Russian military forces the right to use the Hmeimim base at all times without charge and indefinitely.

Hmeimim was initially established to use helicopters, but was later used by Syrian forces to receive small and medium civilian aircraft.

In August 2016, Russia announced its intention to expand the base to turn it into a fully equipped military airbase.

The weapons stored by Russia at the base Hmimim Sukhoi aircraft 34, 24 and 30, attack helicopters and electronic spy planes, as well as other attack aircraft.

The S-400 missile system is one of the most sophisticated weapons Russia has carried to the Hmeimim base.

In 2018, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov confirmed that the Russian military bases of Hmeimim and Tartous in Syria were equipped with sophisticated electronic surveillance systems, in response to President Vladimir Putin's order.
