The second vice-speaker of the Senate, the representative of the opposition, Janine Agnes, said that she temporarily takes over the powers of the head of state, the army expressed her support.

In January, mass protests against President Nicolas Maduro began in Venezuela. The head of the National Assembly, controlled by the opposition, Juan Guaido proclaimed himself the interim head of state.

A number of Western countries, including the United States, have declared recognition for Guaido. Russia supports Maduro as a legitimate president.
