14 November 2019 Record cocaine seizure at the port of Gioia Tauro. The Police of the Provincial Command of Reggio Calabria and the colleagues of the Ros and the financiers of the Provincial Command, with the support of the officials of the Customs Agency and Europol officials, have seized 1,176 kilos of drugs, hidden in 144 packages in a refrigerated container used for transport of bananas.

The container, from South America, was intended according to the travel documents to Germany. This is one of the largest seizures ever made on the national territory: cocaine, very pure, once cut and placed on the market would have yielded over 250 million euros to traffickers. The Port of Gioia Tauro basin is confirmed to be strategic in the drug routes: in the last 12 months, the Guardia di Finanza and the Customs Agency seized over 2.5 tons of cocaine.
