Menlo Park (dpa) - The use of software to detect hate speech on Facebook has reached a new peak. In the third quarter, 80 percent of the deleted content was automatically identified by the online network itself, Facebook reported.

In the first quarter, the value was still at 68 percent. Facebook had after criticism the use of software for detection of hate speech and hate greatly expanded.

The bi-annual report also showed that Facebook deleted 1.7 billion fake accounts in the past quarter. This was 500 million less than in the first quarter - Facebook attributed this to a better provision, which prevents the creation of false accounts.

The report for the fulfillment of Facebook's code of conduct contained for the first time also data of the group belonging to the photo platform Instagram. For example, over the past quarter, 4.4 million drug-related content on Facebook has been removed, compared to 1.5 million on Instagram.
