February 27, 2019 Cardinal George Pell, convicted of child sexual abuse, was taken to the Melbourne prison, where he will spend his first night in jail. Judge Peter Kidd of the Victoria court revoked the provision of bail granted to Pell at the end of a brief hearing.

The former Vatican number three has been found guilty of pedophilia. He had enjoyed the benefits of bail for the duration of the trial and was granted bail after his indictment in December 2018 because it required knee surgery.

The cardinal was found guilty of sexual abuse of two altar boys between the ages of 12 and 13 in 1996 and 1997 when he was archbishop of Melbourne. After the verdict of conviction, the sentence against Pell will be pronounced on March 13, Judge Kidd said. During the hearing it was confirmed that the five crimes of which the cardinal was found guilty involve a maximum sentence of 10 years for each.
