Hamburg (dpa) - The German coastal countries demand a greater commitment of the federal government and countries against stray fishing nets in the sea - so-called ghost nets. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Hamburg, Bremen, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony want to make a corresponding application at the Conference of Ministers of the Environment, which begins today in Hamburg, reports the Funke Media Group. As justification, Jens Kerstan, chairman of the Environment Ministers Conference, says: "For example, porpoises regularly die a torturous death in the stray fishing nets."
