Israel killed the head of the armed wing of Islamic Jihad in a targeted murder on his home in Gaza City, an attack in which his wife also died. The Palestinian response was not long in coming. Alarm sirens sounded in all the cities around Gaza.

Israel announced that it killed Baha Abu al-Ata this night. "His home was attacked in a joint operation of our armed forces and secret services," says a military statement. According to military radio, Abu al-Ata was killed. The broadcaster added that the Islamic jihad itself confirmed his death.

Jihad: Israel has passed the red line
"Israel has crossed the red line," the Palestinian Islamist group warned. The Israeli army confirmed that the target of the attack was the leader of the Islamic Jihad, head of his 'armed wing', the al Quds Battalions, responsible "directly for hundreds of terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers".
