Citizens in the eastern region demanded to strengthen the protection on the beaches through the activation and development of breakwaters, in the light of the continued formation of hurricanes and storms.

Houses in Kalba, Khor Kalba and Qadisiyah were damaged by the storming of their homes after tropical storm Kiar hit the shores of the east coast, as well as damage to houses. .

Local authorities in the eastern region stressed the need to conduct a comprehensive study on how to protect the affected areas from the entry of sea water and rain, as most of them are old areas, and very close to the sea level, which facilitates the entry of its waters in case of weather disasters.

The fisherman Ali Saeed al-Naqbi said: “The tropical storm (Maha) did not arrive, otherwise it would result in damages that could be very large. The people of Kalba city are in fear of a tropical storm after (Kiar) which lasted three days.” Kiar has caused extensive damage to homes, vehicles and streets.

He continued: «natural disasters is not in the hands of anyone, but the inhabitants of the areas of Suhaila, Khor Kalba, Papyrus and Qadisiyah live with constant suffering to enter the water, whether sea or rain, and destruction of furniture and electronic devices, not to mention the threat to them.

He added: «What was experienced by the people and residents of these areas, during (Kiar), and renewed fear with the arrival of tropical storm (Maha) to their area and flood their homes with sea water, whenever a natural phenomenon, prompted them to appeal to the competent authorities to extend the area of breakwater, especially which is along Residential areas, as a permanent and effective solution, in order to preserve public and private property, to achieve psychological and social security, and to protect the lives of the population from any risks expected to occur in the future ».

Salim Mohammed Juma of Kalba supported him, saying: “The city of Kalba has an eight-kilometer-long breakwater along the sea coast, where around one million tons of large and small stones were used in its implementation. To repel sudden natural disasters, despite the preparation of the competent authorities ».

He pointed out that the area does not need new or additional bridges to protect it, but it needs to extend and increase the area in order to perform its role effectively, may be the people of the affected areas that the effectiveness of the bridges partial, and allow the entry of sea water and flood their homes.

He believes that the sand barriers set by the competent authorities are ineffective against natural disasters, and they may increase the amount of mud that accumulates with sea water on the roads and inside the damaged houses, causing furniture damage.

Obaid Mohammed Rashid, from Fujairah Emirate, pointed out that in Fujairah, the kawasir is very effective during the days of turbulent weather, both with rain and other conditions, but in the case of natural disasters it may be only 50% effective, as it needs to extend its area. The tropical storm Maha changed course from the area and sea water entered the main roads and some nearby residential areas such as Al-Faseel. The Century Mall center opposite Fujairah beach umbrellas was damaged.

He said: “The rock barrier instead of sand was a successful solution by the Department of Public Works and Agriculture in the Emirate of Fujairah, where it repelled significantly unless the sand barriers could not repel, where the sand interacts with the sea water forming a sticky mud that is difficult to get rid of if he enters the main streets or houses ».

"The main reason for collecting rainwater inside houses in the papyrus area was under construction for road development projects," said one of the victims, Abu Saif, from the papyrus area of Kalba.

He pointed out that the project included the presence of pits where large quantities of water were collected, and allowed sea water to enter the houses and flooded for furniture.

He pointed out that the sea and rain water not only affect the houses, but vehicles that are completely disrupted, and makes him unable to transport his family during the rains or natural disasters, which makes him trapped in the house that becomes dangerous to him, and his children, praising the efforts of the responsible authorities in helping them and rid them At the right times, however, he is demanding a radical solution. The material losses are not small, he is forced to change the furniture of the house and electronic devices and repair his vehicle which is broken after every weather disturbance.

He stressed the need to highlight the damage areas in the city of Kalba, such as Suhaila, Albardi, Qadisiyah and Khor Kalba, which has more than 200 houses, as they suffer from repeated water entry into the houses and material losses that made some of them move to other areas.

"We are not surprised that rainwater is entering our homes. We are constantly suffering from this problem," said Moza al-Zaabi.

She pointed out that it was not the first time to change the furniture of her home, where Khor Kalba suffers from the entry of rainwater in the winter to homes and damage to furniture and electronic devices.

Al-Zaabi attributed the damage to the small area that protects the area, which can not block large quantities of water from the sea, which leads to flooding, and move towards residential neighborhoods.

Al-Zaabi thanked the efforts exerted by all government agencies to move the owners of the affected houses from their places of residence to safe areas, pointing out that they did not go to the hotel apartments, and chose to stay in the home of their families until the water suction and return home as it was.

Safa al-Haddad called on officials to develop and implement thoughtful plans for the future. Also, residents should avoid the continuous damage suffered by the people of the region from moving to safe houses, disrupting them from going to work, and their children from school, especially when their schools are in another emirate and the decision to disrupt the study was not facilitated.

Development study

On the local side, the Director of the Eastern Region Branches in the Department of Planning and Surveying, Eng. Yousef Al-Othmani, said that a comprehensive and extensive study should be conducted on how to protect the affected areas of Kalba, Suhaila, Khor Kalba, Al-Qadisiya and Al-Bardi. From sea level, which facilitates sea water entry in case of weather disasters. He pointed out that the protection of the affected areas must be from the sea with an integrated project to be a permanent solution.

The Director of Fujairah Municipality, Eng. Mohammed Al-Afkham, said, "We are working with the concerned authorities to study the extension of the available piles and raise their efficiency to achieve the highest level of safety in the face of any potential risks, in the face of natural disasters that may occur in the future and cause sea water to enter the main streets, threatening some houses."
