November 10, 2019Negative debut for Matteo Berrettini at the ATP Finals, starting today at the O2 Arena in London. The 23 year old Roman, number 8 in the world, yields with a clear score of 6-2, 6-1 to the Serbian Novak Djokovic, number 2 of the ATP ranking. Berrettini will be back on the field on Tuesday against the loser of tonight's challenge between the Swiss Roger Federer, number 3 in the world, and Austrian Dominic Thiem, number 5 Atp.

The Serbian has won the Atp Finals five times: only Federer has more titles (6) in the history of the Masters that celebrates the edition number 50. Berrettini, the top 10 that has gained more positions than last year (46, by number 54 to number 8) he had never even played a game here, and until a month ago he would not even have imagined he could be there. Djokovic, at the Atp Finals for the twelfth time in the last 13 years, joins former coach Boris Becker in third place in number of successes in the tournament, 36. Only once, against Ferrer in 2007 at his first match in the tournament, did he lose the debut match in the group.

It is only the beginning for Matteo Berrettini, who still has two chances, against Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem, to give Italy the first win in singles at the Atp Finals: in double there has already been the success of Bolelli and Fognini in the last group game of the 2015 edition. A lesson in London, against Federer at Wimbledon, did him good: in the long run he changed the season.
