They will be five to compete to become the next president. The Constitutional Council today validated the list of candidates for the presidential election on 12 December.

Their files had been validated by the Electoral Organization Authority, a body created at the end of the summer dialogue process. They still had to be done by the Constitutional Council, which also had the possibility to pick the candidates who had lodged an appeal. But nothing changes: the nine appeals were rejected.

A press conference scheduled for this Sunday

Five men will be able to start the official electoral campaign on November 17: Abdelaziz Belaid, former MP, Ali Benflis, former head of government, Abdelkader Bengrina, former Minister of Tourism, Azzedine Mihoubi, former Minister of Culture and Abdelmadjid Tebboune, former Prime Minister Minister. Ali Benflis has already announced a press conference on November 10 to present his program.

The electoral authority, for its part, presented a computer system for monitoring the vote, which it believes should prevent any fraud.

Sofiane Djilali: " The situation is deadlocked "

But the Algerians are still numerous every week , denouncing a vote designed to " reproduce the system ", while civil society and parties that participated in the various dialogue meetings this summer believe that the conditions of transparency are not met. . Under what conditions will the campaign and the ballot be held?

Soufiane Djilali, the leader of the Jil Jadid party, was in favor of holding an election as the beginning of a solution to the political crisis in the country. He was a member of the Mouwatana group, which was demonstrating against Abdelaziz Bouteflika's 5th term in 2018. But today, he believes that the election gives no guarantee of change.

" There are two possible scenarios that everyone admits. Either this election is imposed despite the reluctance of Algerians, and we will have a very weak president from the point of view of legitimacy. The second scenario is that this election can not stand, and there we will fall into a form of transition. But in both cases, the centers of power will remain the same : the military institution is at the heart of the changes, it will remain the mistress, "considers Soufiane Djilali.

" The old political system, or the old regime of Bouteflika's time, is collapsing completely. Now, the big question is : what will the power do ? What great decision will he make ? Will he want to regenerate the same system with new figures, or will he agree to make major concessions to build the rule of law ? He wonders.
