03 May 2018Etically unsuitable: with this in mind Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski are off the board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It was announced by the same organization that awards the Oscars. In a short statement, the Academy specified that the actor and director can no longer be part of the organization. "The board - we read - continues to encourage ethical standards that support the values of the Academy which are about respecting human dignity".
Bill Cosby is freshly convicted of sexual violence, while Polanski is currently under investigation by the Swiss police for a further rape he is accused of, made in 1972 in the Swiss city of Gstaad against a girl who was 15 at the time .
These are the first important measures since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revised the standards of conduct for its more than 8,400 members, following the expulsion in October of the former film producer Harvey Weinstein, overwhelmed by the scandal of harassment sexual acts inflicted on numerous actresses. In the case of Polanski, the expulsion comes more than 40 years after he was accused of raping a 13-year-old and 15 years later who won the Oscar for best director. The director is still sought after by US justice.
