Previously, a multi-hundred-year-old mosque was located at the present site in the city of Ayodhya, located in Uttar Pradesh in northern India.

But the mosque was torn down by Hindu fundamentalists in 1992, which became the starting point for riots and riots in which about 2,000 people were killed.

Among Hindus, many believe that the area is the birthplace of the war god Rama and sees it as one of the holiest places. The Supreme Court ruling states that the place belongs to the Hindus, reports The Guardian.

Fears unrest

In Ayodhya, a large number of security forces have been deployed because of concerns about the verdict.

For Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and his Hindu nationalist BJP, the decision can be seen as a victory.

“The Court has unanimously reached a ruling on a matter that has been debated for decades. All parties have been given sufficient time and opportunity to express their different positions.

This judgment will further strengthen people's belief in the legal process, ”he writes on Twitter.

New mosque building

According to the judgment, the site should now be handed over to a Hindu foundation responsible for the construction. The court has also decided that a separate piece of land in Ayodhya should be given to Muslim groups to build a new mosque.

The hope is that the decision will lead to an end to the conflict around the disputed area.
