Cats are spawning and spinning at elderly Väsbygården. But neither residents nor staff need to think about broken furniture or full litter boxes. The cats are robots and come with washable furs and shut-off buttons.

- There were happy reactions from the residents. They have been waiting for these cats, says Elvira Avdic, a medically responsible nurse in Vallentuna municipality.

The robot cats will cure loneliness

Nora Korhonen has lived at Väsbygården for four years. Her biggest problem is the feeling of loneliness - especially in the evenings.

- All people need closeness. I am a cat man and love cats but here it is not possible to have a real cat. But you can think it's a real being, she says.

Vallentuna Municipality has bought ten cats for their elderly homes at a cost of SEK 100,000. The money is a government grant to increase welfare technology in care.

- The idea is that the cats should add something extra in the everyday life of the elderly, says Elvira Avdic, who is a medically responsible nurse in Vallentuna municipality.
