A Brazilian judge on Friday (November 8th) authorized the release of ex-president Lula, who will be released after a judgment handed down by the Supreme Court the previous day, according to the release order consulted by AFP.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 74, a historical figure of the Brazilian left, will recover his freedom more than a year and a half after being incarcerated in Curitiba (south) for corruption.

In his release order, the judge explained that there was no longer "any basis for the enforcement of the sentence" because of the Supreme Court's decision to put an end to a jurisprudence allowing imprisonment first conviction on appeal, even if all remedies are not exhausted.

Imprisoned since April 2018, Lula began serving an eight-year, ten-month sentence for corruption, but still has other remedies available to higher courts. He has always claimed his innocence.
