After more than a year and a half for incarceration for corruption, former Brazilian president Lula will be released.

A Brazilian judge on Friday cleared ex-President Lula's release from prison, which will be released after a Supreme Court ruling the day before, according to the release order consulted by AFP.

More "no foundation for the execution of the sentence"

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 74, a historical figure of the Brazilian left, will recover his freedom more than a year and a half after being imprisoned in Curitiba for corruption. In his release order, the judge explained that there was no longer "any basis for the execution of the sentence" because of the decision of the Supreme Court to terminate a case law allowing imprisonment as soon as first conviction on appeal, even if all remedies are not exhausted.

In prison since April 2018, Lula began serving an eight-year, ten-month sentence for corruption, but still has other remedies available to higher courts. He has always claimed his innocence.
