“As of September 1, 2019, the resident population of the Russian Federation amounted to 146.7 million people. Since the beginning of the year, the number has decreased by 52.5 thousand people, ”the report said.

It is noted that migration growth compensated for the natural population decline by only 76%.

The Accounts Chamber said that the number of births in January - August 2019 amounted to 994.3 thousand people, which is 83.8 thousand people, or 7.8%, less than in January - August 2018.

“The natural population decline in January - August 2019 amounted to 219.2 thousand people and approached the value of the indicator as a whole for 2018 (224.6 thousand people), which is 50.1 thousand people, or 1.3 times more than the corresponding period of 2018, ”the report says.

As emphasized in the Accounts Chamber, the accelerating natural population decline for the fourth consecutive year poses significant risks for the realization of the national goal of ensuring sustainable natural population growth in the Russian Federation.

In August, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that the Russian government plans to implement a large package of measures to support the birth rate in the country.

In particular, the relevant departments were instructed to provide in the budget for 2020 an increase in the cost of the birth certificate to 12 thousand rubles.
