His name is Giovannino , he is four months old and in just a few hours he has been the least wanted baby to be the most beloved in Italy. It all started after delivery. Giovannino's parents wanted to have a child so much that they underwent IVF . However, when they discovered that their three-kilogram child was born with a rare genetic disease that affected her skin and would require constant care for the rest of her life, they decided to leave him in the hospital.
Giovannino's disease is called harlequin ichthyosis and is extremely rare. Its effects are visible from birth: the baby's skin is covered with scales and his eyelids and lips are turned around and have certain malformations in the nose, ears and fingers.
However, as they explain from the Sant'Anna hospital in Turin to Corriere della Sera , where Giovannino was born and was abandoned, the baby does not have any neurological involvement, it simply cannot be exposed to light.
Since his case was known, calls from young couples who want to adopt little Giovannino have not stopped coming to the Turin hospital. The doctors say that the baby, even in intensive care, could leave the center, but they warn: it will require constant care all the hours in which he is not asleep.
