A Greek-flagged vessel was attacked Monday morning in Togolese waters by armed individuals injuring one and four hostages.

The attack took place at 3am this Monday, November 4 against the tanker Elka Aristotle flying the Greek flag in Togolese waters about 18 km from the autonomous port of Lomé by armed individuals.

According to the statement from the maritime prefecture, the armed guard that had been embarked aboard the ship tried to repel the attack. A member of this guard is wounded and the robbers managed to escape by taking hostage four crew members including two Filipinos, a Greek and a Georgian.

The alert Togolese navy immediately dispatched a patrol boat and a speedboat to the area in search of robbers and kidnapped persons.

An aircraft of the Togolese army supported by another French aircraft present in the waters for a military exercise flew over the area all morning. The robbers have fled to the West Prefecture, the statement said.
