According to the BBC, which reports on the macabre deed, the victims belong to an American family who emigrated to Mexico several decades ago. The group, which consisted of 14 children and three mothers, must have been on their way to La Mora in the state of Chihuahua when they were attacked by armed men in Bavispe, Sonora.

Videos from the murder scene show, among other things, a burnt-out car and it is suspected that several of the victims must have been burned alive. Several people are still missing and there have been reports of both survivors and more dead.

The US is expected to respond

According to the BBC, which quotes local media, a cartel is suspected to be behind the deed and it is speculated as to whether the cartel confused the family with another intended target. In a joint statement, the governors of Chihuahua and Sonora state that an investigation has been initiated and that security forces have been sent to the area.

Several of the dead have had dual citizenship and, according to the BBC, the US is likely to act.
